Thomas Becket was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. His martyrdom (at the hand of followers of the king) attracted a widespread cult and Canterbury became an important pilgrimage destination in the later Middle Ages. These gloves are modelled on a pilgrim badge that depicts Becket’s episcopal gloves.

Christina the Astonishing was a twelfth-century English saint, who hated being around people and ran away to live in the forest to escape them. For weeks on end, she would survive on her own virgin breastmilk.

In the Christian tradition, palm leaves symbolise the victory of the spirit over the flesh. Medieval pilgrims were called ‘palmers’ for the palm leaves they brought back as tokens of their visits to the Holy Land. Tin badges in the shape of palm leaves were common purchases.

The text around the edge of the ornament is in Middle French. It means: ‘Here is the measure of the side wound of our Lord who for us suffered death on the cross’. Some academic work considers the similarity between medieval representations of Christ’s side wound and vulvas.
